It's worth noting that Pokemon the First Movie came out at the height of Pokemania, when Pokemon had taken over the world, there were new reports of Pokemon causing satanism or kids stabbing each other over Charizard cards on a weekly basis, and adults were utterly clueless as to how or why any of this happened, so I can imagine many critics had an axe to grind and gave it terrible reviews on principle. I wonder if the movie would be given better reviews if it were released today now that Pokemon is merely very popular and not an all-encompassing media phenomenon. For what it's worth, the only films to score above 20% on Rotten Tomatoes are Pokemon 3, which has 22% from 55 reviews, and Pokemon I Choose You which has 43% from 7 reviews. I'm hesitant to say that I Choose You backs up the less exposure = better reviews theory because the sample size is too small, but I guess it is possible. Movies 6-19 don't have a critic score, only an audience score. ... Copied to Clipboard! |
