(Professor Layton for the specific game I'm playing) Looking into it, it looks like Layton's Mystery Journey sorta starts with the same premise I was going to come up with. But I'll pretend it doesn't exist so I can give my idea. New Layton game. Layton is missing, and Luke needs to find him on his own. It's been a while, so Luke is noticeably older. Eventually he does find the missing professor, and Luke finds to his shock that Layton hadn't gone missing at all - it was all a grand test for his apprentice, to see if he's ready to shed that title and become a proper detective. (This wouldn't mark the departure of Layton from the series - it would just change the relationship of the two main characters.) --- This is LinksLiege's signature.
