The rounds was designed to maintain supersonic ballistics at moderate ranges for consistent performance out to 500 yards while still maintaining a low recoil impulse to facilitate automatic fire--The AK-47 is closer in design philosophy and combat doctrine to a submachine gun than it is a rifle.
