I think that's mostly the internet being a bit for vile than in person conversations. I've not heard anyone remotely as vile in person yet about politics on either side.

Also I would tend to agree that I called myself mostly in the middle, but after Trump was elected siding more and more with 'left' viewpoints. I still sure as shit wouldn't call myself a member of any party though.

Yet online debate is just vicious these days. But I think it's not just our imagination when we say the divisions are getting deeper. Party affiliation is the new religion it seems:
