This is the regular mode of the game. If you die you'll lose the things you have in your inventory at the moment and you can return to where you died to try to reclaim your items. Freedom Mode: Similar to Survival Mode but you don't need to drink water or eat food, just try no to get killed. Hardcore Mode: The same as Survival Mode but if you die you start from the very beginning. Creative Mode: This would be your passive mode. You can't die and don't have to worry about health, oxygen, hunger or thirst.
