Maybe they just want to know how many have been here for the last 400 years, and how many are from very recent generations. No way descendants of slaves will know what part of Africa they come from, unless you're Alex Haley. Maybe they could just fill in "Africa".

In Puerto Rico we say "el que no tiene Dinga tiene Mandinga" (that who doesn't have Dinka has Mandinka), because supposedly most slaves brought there came from those tribes/people, and everyone has black blood in them. Also, everyone has white Spaniard blood, and native Caribbean/Tano blood.
Do I fill in "Spain", "Africa", or "Caribe" for origin?

I say after about 2 or 3 generations, if everyone in the immediate family was born in the states -- you are American.
This makes sense.

There is "would've", "should've" and "could've".
