While my employer does allow working from home in certain situations, I find it isolating -- gotta have that social aspect. So I moved. Old commute: 1 hr 30 min per way (6 min walk + bus + subway across the city + bus) New commute: 3 minute walk (310m from one door to another. about 0.2 miles) If your family/financial situation allows it, and you're lucky enough to find something nearby -- do it.
