People enjoy looking at beautiful people. There is a place for media that is more realistic, but entertainment is mostly an escape from reality. And who wants to regularly escape to a fantasy world comprised of Walmart shoppers?

I can agree with that. I DO wish that it were more equitable between the genders though. Aside from what people here are saying (because they are not attracted to men and have no reference point of understanding), male characters do not get the same treatment.

I dunno, I know plenty of female gamers who go gaga over male gaming characters too.

It is absolutely undeniable that female characters are sexualized MUCH more often than male. Most gamers are male, so companies have an incentive to do so.

More so? Yes. But that is true of society as a whole, not just gaming.

Not really, it depends on the industry. Gaming as a whole will always have more sexualized female characters, but if you go to an industry that is primarily female like the erotica romance novels, you will often see more sexualized males on the cover than a sexualized female.
