It had so many fun modes, a great roster, and didn't fuck over a player for getting hit once against a professional combo player who basically wants to stunlock to win. Melee had excellent gameplay, though, but it's missing all the extra shit Brawl added. Melee fights are also enjoyable to watch and spontaneous.

I suppose the vocal fans are of the competitive nature. They really are the ones who will play the game way after it's intended lifespan as long as the gameplay offers constant challenge and ways to improve.
