I interpreted it as a Gauntlet-style contest, where RNG determines two entrants and either the first vote or the first to three wins. That one gets put back into the bag and two other entrants face off until there's only one left.

"Gauntlets" in general is similar to just saying "Save Mys" in my mind. Unless I am getting things confused...

the way I differentiate it is that with Save Mys, it's a long process over the course of weeks, sometimes even months, so each one is completely its own project

Gauntlets are usually done over the course of at most like an hour, sometimes multiple gauntlets at once

for comparison I'd say it's the difference between Mercenaries IV (a project, like a particular Save My, etc.) and a specific week a Mercenaries (a line-up of matches that are part of the greater Mercs project) which I'd think is closer to how Gauntlets work

Then again I've done the gauntlets way less than some of the older participants like scarlet or snake so their input might be more relevant
