i wish my local uni offered coursework masters degrees. the only thing keeping me back from that is the research aspect of it. not that im opposed to research, i just cant think of anything unique

Well yeah. But keep in mind that different topics are differently easy for different people. Much like different methods are differently easy to grasp for different people. Someone who is inclined towards, say, computer science or physics will really struggle with qualitative methods.

As for thinking up something original, learning that is part of becoming a PhD. You're not expected to have that skill perfected from the start. The point is that you specialize on a subject to the extent that you essentially reach the "frontier" of knowledge. Once you're there, and once you've done some studies and stuff, finding contributions becomes a lot easier.
