Obama was elected twice, but it was a closer race with Romney. Also, between 2012 and 2016, the alt-right for various reasons became energized and empowered, which made Trump's rhetoric appeal to them especially. Combined with how lethargic people were on Hillary (and that she refused to campaign in stated that were deemed a sure Democratic win, which resulted in states like Michigan and Pennsylvania flipping to Red), and it's rather easy to see how Trump won this time. --- ...
