I honestly believe that the biggest difference between the religious and the areligious is their comfort level with "I don't know".


That is likely a small factor. Not many people you see in the world give two craps about how their cell phone works, or how bridges are built, or how medicine is discovered. So why is that such a large fraction of the world is religious (i.e those that don't feel comfortable with the phrase "I don't know")? The answer is that most people are afraid of being punished in a hypothetical afterlife. You can be as intellectually interested in the faith, but at the end of the day that's what it comes down to. The common faiths are even structured with rules, commandments, sins whatever. Something must happen if you break these rules, otherwise they wouldn't be written by a universal authority figure.
