It does not mean "man who is smarter then me disagreeing with me intelligently who I want to insult" It means going against popular opinion E.g 98% of Scientists agree that man made pollution is having a large negative effect on climate change. So those 2% who don't are contrarians Being contrarian isn't inheritly good or bad. Atheists are contrarian, Trump supporters, vegetarians, people who liked event horizon are contrarian. And since I agree with the consensus on a vast majority of things, I am not contrarian.
