I know that a lot of the fun of Dark Souls games is figuring things out as you go along, but if this is your first DS game especially, having the shards will be very helpful to you as you adapt to how the game works. At the very least I'd suggest looking up the general location of where they are (ex: "ok, I know there is one shard in Earthen Peak").
