And even if the Republic has no army, they should have some sort of authority and presence in the universe. How the fuck does the government function? Second off, Luke's actions are still dumb. Like he's gonna murder his nephew, a child, his best friend and sister's kid in his sleep cuz he's falling to the Dark Side? Wtf? Premeditated murder of a loved one? Luke Skywalker? No. No no no. And Rey vs Luke, Luke gets bested by Rey. She knocks him on his ass and puts a saber to his throat. The analogy of "pulling a gun" makes sense if you kicked my ass in a fist fight first and THEN put a gun to my head. --- Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void.
