these directors think, without the same level of formal training, they can do just as well.

It's funny.

Fans never use that same reasoning on themselves, they always feel like they have a right to tell professionals that they're guilty of "bad writing" and that they should have done this, that or the other(basically regurgitated their fantasies on screen).

Writing is typically a mix of what directors + actors want to see and you'll end up where they'll shoot multiple versions of the same story to see what comes out better or what hits it off with target audiences better. The goal isn't to tell a "good story" it's actually just to entertain the viewer which is why Marvel Movies do so well. They're entertaining to watch (For the most part. Thor 1 not withstanding).

For example, in the original First Blood movie, in the book that it's based off of, at the end. Rambo dies Stallone heavily disagreed with this ending and complained up and down until he got the director to agree to shoot a different ending The ending where Rambo lives and is brought in alive When they showed the endings to two different test audiences, the book ending was universally reviled and not in a subtle way, either.

If you have the Blu-ray, you can see the alternate endings They have 2. One where rambo shoots himself, and one where the commander shoots rambo.
