I'm pretty sure in some of the flashbacks in early DBZ it shows Vegta blowing up some planet and he's just flying in outer space, so maybe he can breathe in outer space anyway somehow. Maybe that's just a completwly false memory or something though. Maybe he held his breath >_> But he definitely can not survive in space though. That was the whole tension of Namek blowing up.
