The US is stuck in such a fucked up cycle. Tipping was just a thing to show generosity. Employers saw that more and more people started handing them out and got the government to cut minimum wage in many states. So tipping basically became mandatory.

And now more workers are gonna be paid by customers and the burden is gonna fall harder on them. And since you can't just get rid of tipping in the US because people will continue to hand them out, a traditional system like outside the US would thus never work.
