As Germany's largest union IG Metall has in the past set standards across the country.
How does that work?

I'm guessing this means "due to their large size, the deals they reach have often set precedents for other industries and unions to follow."

Ah. That makes sense.

How did Americans come to hate Unions? Its fucked how were so brainwashed.

Scope creep. Unions expanded from representing workers and coordinating stoppages, to dictating how business are run and leaking over into politics to enable doing so.
That's largely why the only "industry" where unions still have a foothold is government, which can't just go out of business or relocate the factory to Mexico or overseas.
