Wait.. but they went back to their own earth at the end.
Right.
But that was not the same Earth where the original Cloverfield monster appeared. Cloverfield 2008 Earth was another dimension's Earth that had the monster appear. Like the author said in the interview (it was quick and easy to miss), using the Shepherd would potentially allow creatures to appear in the past, and in other dimensions. This movie was definitely not 2008! And if it were that Earth but years later, they would have already known about the monsters, and wouldn't.

I think 10 Cloverfield Lane could be C1's Earth years later, it's possible part of the world was disrupted by the invsion and the rest kept on doing stuff like making iPhone 6 :P
So basically nothing makes sense right now and all we can hope for is something from JJ to make these stories make sense
