It wants to explain Cloverfield lore, but it doesn't outside from a couple stray lines that don't ACTUALLY give any legitimate explanation. It wants to be a standalone sci-fi thriller, but it falls into genre tropes never properly explores the actual science (for a better alternate universe experience, check out Coherence). It want to have an emotional parallel plotlines connecting space and Earth, but relies on flat characters in space and has nothing happen in the Earth story.
