You can see it falling from the sky for a split second during the last Coney Island scene Except there's a debate on what actually fell. Some say it was the alien, some say a satellite, a few say UFO, others say a meteorite.... So, unless they ever actually tell us, that it only a guess... At the start of the movie they mention a satellite falling, and it was at least my assumption that the satellite is what woke up the monster.
