I don't see how mercantilism and Christianity were competing or how mercantilism is the basis of our calendar... I'm excited I see the explanation though, sounds interesting!

Common trade eventually necessitated the emergence of common clocks and calendars, based on the Europeans who were doing most of the commerce.
It's that simple, really. We still have places like Israel and Japan that maintain different year systems, but global commerce is pretty much all done in the Gregorian calendar on GMT-based time.
