I never bothered with rails outside of the ones that now spawn on world creation. Worth it at all? Especially after finding the Mechanic. You just need to make sure you get yourself a ton of Iron so that you can make enough tracks for whatever you want to use it for. I usually make a track that goes almost to the end of each side of the world.
