Topic	Alright, took a break but it's time to try to tackle Skeletron again!

You never needed access to the dungeon, it's just the easiest place to find him once he can spawn. To beat Skeletron I used a minecart rail that I built across my entire world (high enough to clear any hills or giant trees but not high enough for harpies) if you're traveling at the right speed most of his attacks miss.
