Charging speed does, and if the battery life is shorter than a single session (see: the WiiU gamepad), then it can become an issue, but otherwise it won't make a difference. It does matter for non-rechargeable ones, though, since that dictates how often you're going to be buying new batteries. Wii U gamepad's life isn't great but are you playing for like 6 hours in a row?
