Let's be fair, here. The fanbase loves Spike. Like literally loves him. Not even in a 'love to hate' sort of way. They think he is a hero and cheered when he came back as a 'good guy'. Not only that, but his whole story arc in the later seasons and Angel is how he is trying to be a good guy. You can't really argue, "he's a bad guy, he's not supposed to be good" when he joins the heroes in like season 4 and spends the rest of the series trying to improve himself and kill bad guys.
At the time of the incident he was a really bad guy pretending to be a good guy and trying to force something that wasn't really there. Thus his entire redemption arc and the huge moment that really sparked it. ---
