If you held the stance of "I don't know" then you could not have made a firm commitment to "I refuse to accept that he exists." The best you could say was "I think it's unlikely, but I guess it's possible." And that is not the same thing as refusing to accept it.

Of course it is. If I don't know if something is true, I will reject the claim that it is. I will refuse to accept something because I don't know if it's true or not (or, put another way, because I have not been convinced that it's true).

I reject the claim that god exists, therefore I'm an atheist. Likewise, I don't make any claim regarding god's existence, so I'm agnostic.

I'm an agnostic atheist.
