It's not 9th gen unless the next Xbox or Playstation comes out in the next year or so.

For now, the Switch is an 8th gen redux designed to compete with Xbox One and PS4.

Dreamcast came out in 98. PS2 didn't come out until 2000, and the Xbox / GameCube in 2001. It's 9th gen.

We're not expecting a new PS or Xbox for a long time. EA (or was it Ubisoft?) leaked a few months ago that the PS5 was not even in development yet (console makers send dev kits to studios like 3 years in advance so they have time to make launch games). We're looking at Holiday 2020 at the earliest assuming Sony started sending dev kits immediately after that announcement, and the Switch will have been over 3 1/2 years old by then. At that point Nintendo would be looking at a successor.

So the Dreamcast launched 2 years before its first competitor, the Switch will have launched almost 4 years before its earliest possible competitor.
