In the U.S. it is heavily frowned upon to be sick and not come in especially in tightly staffed, fast pace environments like restaurant, fast food, retail.

Yup, and it's a freagin plague (literally!).

Also way too many people don't realize how freagin long a cold is contagious for (hint: colds last more than 24-48 hours. A lot more).

I lead a team of software engineers, and the company we work for has a very free vacation/sick day policy. Essentially, as long as stuff gets done, you can take off all you want. If that's not an option, you can work from home as long as you like as long as you don't abuse it.

Yet I almost have to yell at my direct reports not to come in when they're sick. There's literally no pressure on them to come. They're getting their raises and promotions anyway. It doesn't eat in their vacation time in any way, shape or form. They don't even have deadlines! I'm their freagin manager and I tell them its okay. But many of them don't listen. It's like they have PTSD or something.
