I struggle to understand how there are people who think Snowden is an amazing hero and Chelsea Manning is an awful traitor.

I personally wouldn't vote for Chelsea Manning (I don't agree with her on many issues), but I think people who want to run for government positions should do it.

Manning - I'm pissed off at my job and have access to documents. Let me leak as much as possible and whatever I can get my hands on to hurt the army as much as possible.

Snowden- the government is illegally spying on the American people. Let me take these specific documents, comb over them to make sure current operations and people aren't put into danger, let me go through credible journalists so they can double check.
