Also, crabcake... in season 6(? I think) of The Apprentice (original US version, not celebrity), Donald Trump fired a contestant on the spot (he was in good standing overall and not at risk to be up for elimination) for using the term "white trash." Trump was highly offended and went on a tirade before firing the contestant. In context, the contestant had used the term jokingly and as a term of endearment. The person he was referring to was himself. He was asked his opinion on something and answered "well, I'm white trash, so..." before starting to explain his opinion and quickly being cut off by Trump. In context, it was harmless, self-deprecating and not meant to be pffensive, but if the contestant used the term to refer to himself, clearly he fit the literal definition, just as Michael Brown fits the literal definition of a thug (plus "thug life" culture is also as self-defined as "white trash" culture). Trump clearly did not find the comment amusing. Just curious about your thoughts on this and how it parallels the discussion at hand.

Thug and white trash are not the same.

Thug can apply to anyone

White trash applies to white people

When Trump asks for clarification on what he means by white trash, the guy offers it, and his references could describe anyone. Sure, you could argue that other terms would be more appropriate to use than "white trash" because of the implication, but one could make the same argument with thug, as there are plenty of synonymous words (mentioned by people on both sides) that no reasonable person would argue have racial connotations (and I know reasonable is a key word here, and I'm using it precisely as I mean it. You argue thug is interchangeable with criminal by definition, fair enough. White trash is just as interchangeable with... let's say trailer trash, which has no obvious racial connotation but implies lifestyle traits, just as thug does).

If you look at the comments in the video, you will see a lot of people criticizing the fired contestant for his choice of words, which is fair, and also if we remain analyzing the parallel here, would suggest that legitimate thugs should not be glorifying that culture and misdeeds celebrated in it, and that is true as well. If it is fair to say "don't call yourself white trash just because you engage in certain activities that are frowned upon by many and are attributed to white people, whether accurately or through misrepresentation," it should be equally fair to say the exact same thing but with 'white trash' and 'white' substituted by 'thug' and 'black' and with emphasis on the bolded section in all cases.

So, you're going to argue that "thug" is racist even though it's not beholden to any race because "white trash" is a thing?

Like, seriously?
