When Ganon, Jen and I played it went on for 5 hours. >_>

It was fun though! If people want a shorter game, I'd need some host tips on which settings would help with that.

Set the pace to quick and start the game in the classical era instead of ancient, check off "no barbarians". All of those speed things up in their own way and honestly just make it more playable. Those are options my friends and I typically ran with. We would also choose a huge map with "large islands" or "small continents" (with high sea level) and abundant resources because it seemingly boosted things too...

No barbarians simply removes an annoying speedbump to progress while one of the above mentioned map styles would segregate Civilizations more to allow for unhindered and rapid development. By not having any gigantic landmasses on a "huge" map, it also encourages expansion further away as it leaves colonization options open further abroad without having to fight immediately to get them because there are just a lot more land masses; unrestricted expansion speeds up everything else in this game. Skipping ancient and having a quick pace are pretty obvious as to why they make it go faster. My friends and I had to try different stuff to quicken the pace because we were pretty limited with the days and times we could play together.
