The only fault capitalism even starts to have in this, is that it's constantly trying to sell us crap we don't need.
People buy more than they need but they need it. Before cell phones became affordable, no one needed one. We managed without. My son had one at 12, I between him and my wife I have a $150 bill (including the payments for his iphone). Before the internet we communicated the way we had to. Landline phone, letter, etc. My phone bill at my apartment in the 90's was like $15-20. Even when I got an internet with dial up, I had a local number to call. Now I pay $50 a month for internet service.

As technology more and more integrates into our lives, these previously luxuries become "needs". And in a capitalist society, yes, every manufacture of a good wants them to sell to gain a profit, so they will convince anyone that can be convinced that their product is needed. But could a person in this day and age do without cell phones and internet?
