All but one of your main party members turn out to be orphans from the same orphanage and they all forgot each other because they've all been using a certain kind of magic in battle. It's mentioned briefly in the beginning that using this magic can cause memory loss, so it isn't exactly out of nowhere, but the revelation doesn't change anything. The dynamics between the characters are almost exactly the same afterwards and it makes no difference to the plot.

I really enjoyed FF8, but the story was a mess. My biggest issue with it were all the huge coincidences.

They are all childhood friends with the exception of Rinoa, and end up traveling together as young adults. not a huge deal when it comes to Squall, Quistis, and Zell. But Selphie and Irvine? Selphie just happened to transfer to Balamb Garden in time to enter SeeD with the gang and go on a mission together. Irvine only enters the picture because the group gets stranded near Galbadia and is given fake orders from Balamb to snipe Edea. And of course... Irvine is the sniper. 1 in a billion events like this happened too many times.
