I think we need to take a look at what hours of operation are, since some of the comments in here are downright ridiculous.

Hours of operation are quite literally the ownership/management of the store saying that people are welcome to come in during that time period. Even if a customer finishes their purchase and leaves at 9:59:59, as long as the store is still open the customer is well within their rights because management is saying they're still willing to take customers. Sure, some employees don't get paid for work after 10 and still need to clean, etc., but that's on management, not the customer. Employees should file complaints with their Department of Labor in that case since it's illegal.

On the other hand, customers staying after closing hours can fuck right off. Coming in at 9:55? Better know what the fuck you're getting and do it fast because you're not staying past 10.

It depends on what the business is imo. If it's a restaurant, then definitely get there at least a half hour before closing or about 15 minutes if it's fast food . A store or gas station is fair game as long as you're in and out before closing time.

Exactly this, though some restaurants will simply stop letting people in a certain amount of time before close but still pay the employees to work while customers finish their meals.
