Ever hear of target identification ?, if you can sneak up on the person ever think they might just run in fear when they learn your armed ? If the thief is armed you will have a much better defense if you give them a chance to leave peacefully before they get their weapon out vs sneak up and murder them. --- "Always two there are, a master and an apprentice" ...
