How much do you need to destroy with your own hands before you start to question whether your "help" is a good idea? For one-dimensional superheros, never. For actual people, it's a difficult question. Then there's the aspect of his time and the Jedi's time being over. It's like Toph in Korra. She had literally the same arc as Luke, minus the massive guilt over Kylo (though she did have a different guilt).
