I don't know if he ever held the attention/admiration of audiences older than himself. He clearly wrote this book to his fans, and is called out for this many times. To read the original manuscript and its comments, is to see he was never any more deserving of the spotlight than any internet troll disciplined enough to finish a written sentence. The rhetorical contrast between the editor and him leaves him looking like a conservative pet gay trotted out the rile up the fan base, scandalize the opposition, and dispel rumors that American conservatism is fundamentally homophobic...by having their mascot chastise queer people for being too gay.

The voice of the editor doesn't disagree with any of what's written here, they're just too professionally embarrassed by it to publish it as is.
