Maybe they're trying to come to terms with the idea that they can still be attractive? "Fat" is just a statement of weight, not necessarily a statement of ugliness. It isn't though. It's always used negatively when describing a person. I know. It's become a helluva loaded word. Too many people conflate "fat" with "ugly". And for some people it's unattractive on principle, and that's okay. But maybe there's a little bit of conflict. :P Words are used for their listeners. If people think it's negative, you used a negative word. It's frustrating.
