The story is read to you like a choose your own adventure novel. What you encounter is determined by a deck of 'encounters' you choose before starting the adventure. Your rewards on each adventure are determined by the cards you selected before the adventure. You have a limited of turns based on your food. When you do arrive in combat, it becomes an Arkham style beat em up with the special equipment you found over the course of the adventure. There is also some encounters that are determined by chance or a game of three card monte. After you finish, you unlock new cards based on your performance that you can swap into your deck for the next adventure.
