In all honesty the only reason it gets media and therefore internet attention is because the last president made it illegal to discriminate against homosexuals to deflect attention away from putting the TPP on the fast track. This removed a traditional and effective wedge issue which the system has been trying to replace, and while trans will never fully replace homosexuality as it doesn't affect enough people it does involve non-majority sexuality so it has some effectiveness as a wedge issue.
Homosexuality, which affects ~10% of the human race, was a traditional part of the god, guns, gays, race, and immigration wedge issues which have effectively kept Americans apart from each other and prevented worker solidarity for generations.
Trans only affects about ~.5% of the human race and therefore will never be a full replacement for homosexuality, but the system will keep trying while also doubling down on religion, race, and immigration since guns can't be used right now while the Repubs run the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Can you imagine the NRA trying to say that Trump will be taking people's guns? Of course not that's only a wedge issue when they Dems have power.
To illustrate how wedge issues work I like to quote Karl Rove in 2004 while he was running Bush 2's reelection campaign, "I don't actually care what people think about God, guns, and gays I just prefer that they think about God, guns, and gays instead of thinking about where their jobs went."
Great post, but the percentage of gays is lower than 10%. Still bigger than the number of trans people though. ---
