There's just a First Order (Empire) and a Rebellion. No explanation of why, it just is. That doesn't really raise the stakes for me. How did Snoke and co. build this First Order after the Empire was exposed as murderous overlords? Why did people go for that again? The whole universe doesn't have enough backstory going for me and because of that I just don't care as much. Why is there an Empire in episode 4? Where did it come from? Who built it? Man this lack of backstory is just completely killing the movie for me.
