I was a trans many years before watching anime, and I don't even watch that kind of anime that is mentioned in the OP. Claymore, Ergo Proxy, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Stein's Gate, Texhnolyze, and the like, are what I watch. I also don't like cutesy women, I like tough, independent women (e.g. Claire, Re-l Mayer, Revy, Kurisu). And the avatars that I use are more sexual and 'dark' in nature, not some anime chick.

Also, what made me the way I am is being brought up by a bunch of women and my friends were usually girls -- girls that always liked to dress me up, yet at the same time had a crush on me and treated me like some sort of BF. My relations with women were always like that... they enjoy dominating/controlling me, but somehow fall in love with me, too. It's almost like I'm both genders in one body, and that intrigues the women that get to know me.
