It probably would not work in like Star Trek where battles between ships are all about torpedoes and lasers and maneuvering, but in Star Wars where only small ships like X-Wings and Tie Fighters are maneuverable, a few light speed death spear would wreck the bigger ships.

The whole scene made it very clear that smaller fighters can't stray too far away from the bigger ships for some reason, and no matter how much firepower you have, it won't penetrate a ship's shield which in itself has a renewable energy source that not only neglect cannon fire but is able to repair damage to itself faster then the damage being inflicted as long as a certain amount of spacing is maintained (also we have to believe the Order doesn't have any heavily armed ships which sacrifices some armor for speed which could had easily taken out one ship), really makes no sense.
