I remember as a teen in the early/mid 2000s, waiting for my dial-up internet to connect and then chatting with all my friends from school on AIM. I remember later on there was a bot you could talk to, I think it was called smarterchild. Then Myspace and Youtube came along, followed by facebook, twitter, and all the rest of the social media websites. I honestly didn't think people still used instant messagers for social reasons anymore (my work, however, utilizes it to communicate).

But yeah, as other people said, AIM, and instant messagers like it, bridged the gap between the message boards and forums of olden days and the social media revolution that took place in the late 2000s.
