I thought Ben Kenobi disappears of his own will, a split-second before Skywalker appears to strike him down.

You could argue that, sure. I'm not saying it's wrong.

However, with Luke, he was force projecting himself who knows how far away to a completely different planet. You saw how much energy it took out of him after he let's the projection down. He's exhausted, out of energy and collapses. Going with the Eclair's Obi Wan vanishes of free will, Luke could have done the same after using up all his energy. Now having restored hope of Jedi's continuing on, Rey is the hope he wanted after he felt like he failed Ben.

But it's only one thought and interpretation.
My main point being, it wasn't an ambiguous death.
