I teach 4th grade and I'm finding that my kids will hear things, like maybe from an older sibling, and will "try it out" not understanding what it means. I've had to have some private discussions with a few of them.

When I was in 4th grade, everyone already knew what gay meant. There was a weird kid who ran around touching other guys because he got picked on all the time and he thought that would scare people away. But that just made him get picked on even more and they called him gay all the time

I did have a boy call another "gay" in a not so nice way. I talked to him later and asked him if he knew what it meant. He didn't. He said his older brother calls him gay. Gay is a hard one because I don't want my kids to think there is something wrong with being gay or that it's a bad thing. At the same time I don't want them throwing around a word they don't totally understand.
