JONALEON1 12/07/17 3:39:00 PM #408: | 5. Kill Bill: Volume 2 - 72 points Snake - 1 scarlet - 3 Inviso - 4 Johnbobb - 5 Wickle - 13 Karo - 17 JONA - 29 Snake - I thought it would be hard top the first one, but in my opinion, Kill Bill Volume 2 succeeded. Its a lot more story-driven and coupled with the amazing characters, KBV2 is a film with many more little moments that stick out to me than the first. Bills Superman speech, Budds philosophical waxing, Elle Driver in the hospital, the entire Pai Mei training sequence. Its all some really great stuff. The Bride herself gets even more characterization, taking on motherly traits and showing her brutal origins with Pai Mei helped humanize her from the killing machine she was in the first one. I think with the Kill Bills, it is hard to pick which one is better, as theyre meant to be viewed as one entire film anyway. For me, the character drama trumps the incredible action of volume 1, and thats not even to say Kill Bill 2 doesnt have awesome fighting scenes either. scarlet - Has what the first Kill Bill lacks substance. The dialogue is so snappy and it solidifies the story well. Man, just imagine the Gauntlet crew rating the GOOD Tarantino films! Inviso - Halfway through the list, its impossible for me to separate the two halves of Kill Bill. Anything from this point on will have to be better than BOTH films to outrank Volume 2. Butwhen choosing between the two, its a tough choice. Volume 1 is very much the action movie of the two. It opens with the Vernita fight and ends with the House of Blue Leaves. Volume 2 is much more subdued. Only two real deaths, both of which are relatively quick, plus one AWESOME fight scene. Volume 2 is very much the PERSONAL half of the set. Beas interactions with Elle, Bill, and even Budd feel so much deeper than her generic hatred for O-Ren and Vernita. And I personally LOVE Elle. Shes my favorite character in the two films, so much so that one of my furry characters is modeled after her. Ultimately, what gives Volume 1 the edge is partially the House of Blue Leaves, but also partially the old JONA training sequence. I get the NEED for itbut Im just not a huge fan of training sequences in these movies. Thats the difference between the two. Thats it. Johnbobb - Oh god, I forgot all about the Pai Mei stuff here! I cant say I was particularly a fan of Executioners from Shaolin, but I still loved seeing how blatantly it was referenced here. Its a throwback I never understood when watching it before (and wouldnt have understood without watching the rest of this list first). One thing I will say in support of Kill Bill Vol. 2 is that it makes its inspirations loud and clear, and really serves as an excellent summation of some of the other themes on the list (while also tying in themes of spaghetti westerns in a really cool way). While I have a lot of respect for it because of that, I still cant call this better than the first Kill Bill. At times the pacing isnt quite as good, and it doesnt have the same brilliance when it comes to fight scenes (after seeing both Kill Bills several times, its always the House of Blue Leaves scene I think of first, while O-Ren stands out as the dominant villain). But at its worst, its still the 2nd best half of one of the most incredible action films of all time. --- The Iron BKSheikah break your bracket and make you humble! ... Copied to Clipboard! |
